The Female Gymnasium was built and opened in 1874 and originally provided pedagogical education. On March 27th, 1921 it was reorganized into the Yelets Workers’ Faculty, which gave education to more than 2,000 people. By the beginning of the 21st century the Yelets Teacher’s Training Institute had actually become an international center that was engaged in studies of Bunin, Prishvin and Zamyatin’s creative works. Having appreciated its work, the Ministry of Education decided to change the status of the educational establishment from the Teacher’s Training Institute to the I.A. Bunin Classical University. The former Female Gymnasium building became Building №1 at the University.
