The Yelets classical Male Gymnasium was founded in 1871. Some people who became later very famous in Russia and all over the world studied in it, including the Russian writers I.A. Bunin and M.M. Prishvin, the artist N.N. Zhukov, the first Soviet Health Minister N.A. Semashko, and others. At present School №1, named after M.M. Prishvin, occupies the building of the former Male Gymnasium.
