Yelets Red Square used to be a part of the Yelets wooden fortress; it has a rich history and its cultural layers are of particular interest to historians. Some archeological excavations were held in the square, which resulted in setting up an open-air museum. It covers a part of basement of the old Voskresensky (Resurrection) Cathedral of the 17th-18th centuries, the Voskresensky churchyard (end of the 16th century – the second half of the 18th century), the tomb of a priest (mid 18th century) and the cultural layers of the 16th-20th centuries.
