A memorial sign to the soldiers and victims of the Great Patriotic War was placed on the square in 1985 for the 40th anniversary of the victory. The inscription “We are from Yelets” on the steel is a copy of the inscription which was left on the base of the Reichstag building by Boris Sidelnikov, a native of Yelets, in 1945. There is a quatrain on the back side of the steel written by the local poet M. Glazkov. The sculptor was A. Shashin, the architect was A. Novoseltsev.
