Yelets was awarded the honourable status of «The Town of Military Glory» by the decree of the President of Russia on October 8th, 2007. The creation of a magnificent monument on Red Square of Yelets was a landmark event for the natives of Yelets. On May 7, 2010 a solemn opening was held for the figure. On May 9th, 2010 the first military parade, which has become annual since then, took place. The monument was built from March 19th, 2010 to May 7th, 2010. The project designers are architects I.N. Voskresensky, V.V. Perfiljev and sculptor S.A. Sherbakov.
