Anya Gaiterova Square

Anya Gaiterova SquareAnya Gaiterova, a resident of Yelets, was only 17 when she entered the people’s volunteer corps regiment. She reconnoitered many times when Yelets was occupied by Hitlerites and took part in its deliverance. Her machinegun fire turned to bay with fascists for almost twenty-four hours near the village Russky Brod on December 18th, 1941. Anya was fatally wounded by a splinter from a mine exploded nearby. She was conferred the fighting Red Banner Honour posthumously. The street near the plant «Hydraulic drive» was renamed Anya Gaiterova Street. The unveiling of the memorial to the fearless woman scout was held in the square of the street on May 8th, 1965. It was sculpted by Burmistrenko.
